In the year 1342, a Great Battle was fought. The threat of the Black Death swept across Europe, laying ruin to cities and ravaging entire villages. Already besieged by years of religious warfare and political strife, the city of Languedoc, France was paralyzed by the chaos. Darkness engulfed the city until the Warriors of Light, an army dedicated to eradicating witches and sorcerers and abolishing evil, appeared to face down the source of this violence, the Warriors of Darkness. But the two great armies were of equal strength; the battle raged on until Heaven itself was forced to intervene. Given a vision, the Great Light Mage Gesser called a stop to the fighting and, with the powerful Dark Sorcerer called Zavulon, negotiated a truce which still holds to this day: Light and Dark will retain footing in the mundane world, freely recruiting human beings to their respective sides, but so that neither side becomes too powerful, there would be laws and there must be supervision. The Great Treaty dictated that each side should supervise the other, so that the equilibrium might be maintained. And so the Day Watch was formed by the Dark Ones, to ensure the Warriors of Light would remain true to the Treaty. The Light Ones, in turn, created the Night Watch, to monitor the forces of Darkness. Since that time, both sides have remained balanced, forestalling the final battle that will at last determine the fate of the world.
